The story of John the Baptist being beheaded by Herod is about power. It’s about a powerful ruler being manoeuvred into a position where he has only one choice. It’s a prequel to when a similar thing would happen to Pilate – who ended up having no option but to condemn Jesus to death. As these two rulers found out, human power always has limits. But the power of forgiveness has no limits – even though it can appear weak, it finds its source in God.
